Mahalia
Jackson rose from poverty in the Black Pearl neighborhood of New
Orleans, to become the world's greatest gospel singer, performing at
President John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961 and at the historic
March on Washington in 1963 where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
delivered his monumental "I Have A Dream" speech.
Mahalia: A Gospel Musical celebrates her music as it chronicles her life.

Jeanie Tracy sang opposite Jennifer Holiday in the Off-Broadway
production, Sing Mahalia Sing, eventually replacing her in
the title role. She is best remembered for her astonishing six
winning performances on the first season of Ed McMahon's Star Search,
as well as her many #1 and top ten records.
"Mahalia! A Gospel Musical" is an uplifting,
spiritually exhilarating story of a soul -- one filled with faith,
joy and bursting with song."

Mahalia Jackson's story is a tale torn from the pages of history, and an essential one to share with our children during Black History Month. Beside her interactions with President John F. Kennedy and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she made history herself, crashing through racial barriers. She permanently changed the recording industry, single-handedly proving that consumer demand existed for her special brand of Black sacred music and paving the way for waves of gospel artists who followed.
As part of our Lorraine
Hansberry Theatre Youth Academy's
ImaginARTS Program in the San Francisco Unified School
District, there will be a special morning matinée performance
